Belagavi formerly known as Belgaum is one of Karnataka's most underrated cities. Sitting right at the border of Karnataka and Maharashtra, it is a city with a unique cultural identity, a mix of Kannada and Marathi influences, and a surprisingly rich history. The Belagavi Fort, built in 1519, sits right in the heart of the city and houses two beautiful monuments inside are the Kamal Basti Jain temple and the Masjid Safa mosque, standing side by side as a quiet symbol of the city's diverse heritage. The Kittur Fort, located about 45 km from Belagavi, is historically significant as the site of Rani Chennamma's brave rebellion against the British East India Company. The Gokak Falls, often called the Niagara of Karnataka, are about 65 km from the city and absolutely worth a day trip. The surrounding Sahyadri hills make Belagavi a pleasant escape with good weather for most of the year. The best time to visit Belagavi is between October and February. Belagavi may not be on every travel list yet but it deserves to be.
