Cuttack is the silver city of Odisha. Famous for its filigree jewellery made out of silver, the ancient city, located by the bank of the Mahanadi River, is one of the oldest cities of Eastern India and has much more depth than many visitors know.
Founded a long time ago, during the medieval period, Cuttack has been the capital city of Odisha. Historical monuments are plentiful here and they tell the story of the city's glorious past. Barabati Fort, constructed during the medieval period and located by the Mahanadi River is one of the main attractions in the city. Also, there is the Qadam-i-Rasul shrine, which includes a mosque and a dargah. The shrine represents the best samples of the Mughal architecture.
Famous Dussehra celebrations in Cuttack are renowned all over India. Every year the city erects thousands of silver and gold tableaux depicting the various goddesses.
There is an interesting museum in Cuttack, the Netaji Birth Place Museum, dedicated to the great freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose, who was born in Cuttack.
