Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, formerly known as Aurangabad, is the gateway of Maharashtra to some of the best historic places in the world. While it might not feature prominently on everyone's list of destinations, it lies at the heart of India's archaeologically rich region.
Ajanta Caves, situated about 107 kilometers from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, are one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites which comprise of thirty rock caves which are adorned with paintings and sculptures that can be traced to the 2nd Century BC. The Ellora Caves, situated only about 30 kilometers away, are no less impressive as it features 34 caves reflecting the cultural significance of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, carved out of a single piece of mountain.
Some of the prominent structures within the city include the Bibi Ka Maqbara which dates back to the 17th century and also serves as an example of the Taj Mahal of the Deccan. Another site worth visiting would be the Daulatabad Fort, one of India's most strategically positioned fort structures, which is located atop a hill about 15 kilometers from the city.
