Panaji is the capital of Goa, a more mature and sophisticated place than anywhere else in this Indian state. When you think about Goa, you probably think about its pristine beaches. However, if you want a relaxing and pleasant urban experience, you can try the small city by the Mandovi river.
The main attractions in Panaji are situated in the historic Latin Quarter of Fontainhas. This picturesque quarter has narrow streets filled with old Portuguese-style houses with ochre, yellow, and terracotta paints with azulejo tiles on the balconies. It is very enjoyable to walk around Fontainhas in the morning hours. Do not miss the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception which is located atop a hill in the city center.
A stroll along the waterfront promenade on the bank of the Mandovi river is an excellent way to spend a cool evening in Panaji. The presence of several casino boats in the river makes it even more interesting. If you are a person who likes history, go to see the Goa State Museum or Institute Menezes Braganza.
The period from November to February is the best time to travel to Panaji.
